My Background

Dr. Paonessa graduated from the New Jersey medical School in Newark, New Jersey, and received his M.D. degree in 1984. He completed his internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey, as part of the Seton Hall School of Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Paonessa completed a year of fellowship training in Spine Surgery and Scoliosis at the New York University Medical Center in 1990. Part of this training included assisting in the management of the Scoliosis Clinic and the Spinal Cord Injury Center at Bellevue Hospital.

Dr. Paonessa has lectured and presented several papers on spinal problems at national meetings including the Scoliosis Research Society, the North American Spine Society, and the New England Spine Study Group. His training includes the care of neck and back problems such as herniated discs, arthritis of the spine, spinal fractures and scoliosis. In addition, he is interested in osteoporosis and the care of tumors of the spine.

Dr. Paonessa is on staff at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich and the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. Dr. Paonessa is married and has three children. He enjoys skiing, tennis and backpacking.
